oh shit...
Something very annoying is happening to my computer this morning, and I have no idea how to get rid of it. Everything is looking like this:



Although none of the systems seems affected, I can't work like this on my animation. >_<
I have done nothing out the ordinary last time I used my computer. Does anyone have an idea what this is and how to get rid of it? :(

What a way to start the day.

edit: A replacement card is ordered, and my composer will get it installed somewhere next week so I can continue work on the project full force.

As for now... I going to visit Fiona this afternoon now. Way better then getting totally frustrated with f*cked-up visuals. (the more you draw in an area on the screen the worse the distortion gets. Aaargh!)

And as for tomorrow... it's my mom's birthday party so that's pretty convenient at this point. With any luck I'll have the new graphics card installed before the next long day of work on the animation. :)

Is your monitor cable plugged in correctly? R, G and B have their own 'pin', and if one doesn't connect correctly, you get things like that.

You would think so, but that's not it. The distortion react to my actions (like typing or dragging a window) it could be some graphic card problem?

Do you have a second monitor lying around somewhere? You could use that to determine on which side of the cable the problem lies.

From what you say, it does sound like there's something wrong on the PC side. Is the graphics card set properly in the slot? Do the fans on the graphics card make more or less noise than normal?

No spare monitor in this house...

My computer doesn't make more noise then usual. For the rest I don't know, I've never been inside it. But everything appears to work just fine except for this weird magenta distortion that goes over the normal RGB graphics.

Take it to a shop and have them sort it out. If you're not comfortable (or knowledgable about) opening up your PC case, there's not much to be done at this point.

Ik zat ook aan een overkokende graka te denken (als de ventilatoren hard draaien, dan zit daar dus veel warmte die niet afgevoerd kan worden), maar als je geen ervaring hebt met het openschroeven van computerkasten en wat aanklooien met wat je daar zoal aantreft, dan is het heel erg lastig om via een postje aan te geven waar je naar moet kijken en wat je zoal moet doen.
In plaats daarvan leek het me handiger als je dat overliet aan iemand die het vaker heeft gedaan, omdat die waarschijnlijk veel sneller het euvel zou hebben gevonden en verholpen.

Tip: Kijk mee over de schouder van de persoon die het gaat fixen -- dan kan je het de volgende keer zelf!

I asked Jeroen, he says it looks like your graphics card might be overheating, or on the verge of dying. :(

He's right, sadly. I figured it out on some forums that people complain about precisely this kind of problems with this model of graphics card after a couple of years. It slowly kills itself by overheating, and since mine is five years old...

But I'm already in the progress of arranging a replacement card. More powerful, still suitable for the system and just a tenth of the prize of the original. :)

Cool! I hope your computer will be back to normal soon.

(I remember my whole computer broke down once during one of the heat waves. It was a couple of years ago when we were still living in the 5th floor and the sun shone on our windows and roof ALL DAY LONG. It was about 40+ degrees in there, and the computers didn't hold on :( )

Tijd voor een andere grafische kaart. Is waarschijnlijk overgekookt doordat hij vol zit met stof, gecombineerd met het warme weer. Het is in ieder geval niet je monitor, anders zou het screenshot er op een andere computer wel normaal uit gezien hebben. Dus dat scheelt weer een gat in de begroting :)

Het is inderdaad de grafische kaart. Maar goed, die is ook al weer 5 jaar oud! (we hebben deze computer in elkaar laten zetten door Mycom in maart 2003) Ik heb samen met Alexander (die verrassent veel van computer hardware afweet voor een componist) een vervangende kaart gevonden die nog in zo'n antieke bak past, een heel stuk krachtiger is, en dan nieuw nog geen 70 euro kost. Was die kaart die er nu nog in zit in de tijd niet iets van 500 euro? :o

Maar ik heb alweer geld opzij gezet voor mijn volgende grafische raket... maar als ik nog even door kan met deze oude kast doe ik dat toch nog wel graag. :)

Is dat al weer zo lang geleden zeg, niet te geloven. Ja, die grafische kaart was toen top of the line, ze zullen bij Mycom wel gedacht hebben dat het de ultieme gamer computer moest worden. Het moederbord en de processor waren ook het beste wat er toen voorhanden was. Hij heeft het goed volgehouden al die tijd!

Als je toch aan de binnenkant bent, kijk ook even hoe de toestand is met de processorventilator. Probeer voorzichtig het stof weg te blazen, mocht er daar ook een ophoping zijn. Daar zijn speciale spuitbussen met lucht voor, misschien weet Alexander daar aan te komen. We moeten niet hebben dat straks die kast weer open moet omdat door het warme weer de processor overkookt.
